Any AMA legal airplane is allowed in Sportsman, excluding those requiring Turbine or Large Model Airplane program waivers by the AMA.

All classes except 406 will fly their 2025 sequences for 6 rounds. 406 will fly 4 rounds of P and 2 rounds of F.

Masters and FAI Silver will both fly the P25 sequence. Takeoffs and landings will be judged in Masters as they have in the past. FAI Silver takeoffs and landings will continue to not be judged.

Southwest Winter Championships 2024
The Southwest Winter Championships is a 2 contest series for pattern flying held on back-to-back weekends in Arizona at the end of February and early March.

The Superstition Pattern Classic and Desert Pattern Challenge will hold individual contests on back-to-back weekends. The best cumulative placing across the contests for each class will be named the Southwest Winter Champion for that class.

Come compete to be the best! We’d love to have you for both contests, but each will be a standalone traditional pattern contest as well, so come out even if you can only make one.

Arizona offers a wealth of recreational and tourist opportunities this time of year making it a great winter vacation for families, and for competitors to spend time in the week between the contests. Activities include copious outdoor activities like hiking and biking, MLB’s Spring Training, many historical and geographical attractions, and more.
Championship Rules
Lowest cumulative placing for each class will win
Competitors must compete in both contests, in the same class
Ties will be broken by:
The highest placing in either contest
The highest total score of the 8 rounds across the contests (excludes dropped rounds)
